Chapter 8 – Bharat Mata

NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Hindi Chapter

Introduction

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born in Allahabad in an affluent family. His father was a renowned lawyer in that place. He acquired his elementary education at home and then went to London for higher studies and studied at Cambridge University.  He was pursuing his studies in Law when he got immensely impressed with Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy. At Gandhi Ji’s behest, he left his studies and got involved in the freedom struggle against British rule. In 1929, he headed the Indian National Congress in the Lahore session and demanded complete independence.

Nehru Ji was the first Prime Minister of India after independence, in 1947. He was devoted to building the new India till the end of his life. He made many plans for the development of India, which included scientific, industrial, economic reforms along with progression in art, culture, and literature. He was known as Chacha (uncle) Nehru amongst kids, and he was a propagator of peace, non-violence, and humanity at an international level.

The chapter we are going to study here is the fifth chapter from his novel “Hindustan Ki Kahani” (The story of India). In this section of the story, Pandit Nehru has described how he went to every nook and corner of the country to organise many assemblies for spread the idea that despite being divided into many sections, India is still one country. The whole essence of the story is that India is a united country. Also, the fate of every part of the country is interlinked with each other.

Bharat Mata

Nehru Ji used to organise meetings mostly in villages to propagate what India must mean to each Indian. He used to avoid going to the big cities since the city people thought of themselves as very clever. In contrast, the simple village folks would listen intently to his lecture and understand the importance of the country.

He had travelled to several parts of the country and was acquainted with the poor and dismal state of farmers around the country. The kind of India he dreamt of was devoid of several things. He dreamt of India to be devoid of poverty, the people in debt, wealth belonging to a few, Jamindari, exploitation by lenders with their hefty interest rates, and torture of ordinary people by police. Before freedom, he always inspired people to come together and fight for independence.

In his discourses, he mentioned how America was reaching heights of prosperity and the unbelievable changes happening in the Soviet Union. He said that getting his thoughts across to people was not an easy task, but it was not as difficult as he assumed it to be. This is because those people had imagined an India based on the historical stories and epics they believed and also the economic slowdown after 1930 made them understand what he spoke about.

Pandit Nehru shared his experiences of the journey from Khyber Pass in the North to Kanyakumari in the South. Whenever he went to any assembly, he was greeted with the slogan “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” (Long live Mother India). He would quiz them as to what they meant by “Bharat Mata” and what it meant for them. Once a farmer told him that Bharat Mata meant the soil and land, and Nehru Ji further asked him which land did he mean, was it his village land or land of his district or entire India’s land. When people got tired of his questioning, he explained to them that what he thought of India was much larger than the boundaries in their minds.

He told the crowd that “Bharat Mata” is nothing but the millions of people who reside here, like all of them present there and the rest of the people in India. When we praise India, we are praising all these people. He explained to them that they are all part of India. Hence, they are India themselves. He saw a sparkle in the eyes of people and that gave him the pleasure of discovering something big.
